Seven ways to choose a blog name for your blog

1. Something related to your blog topic

Your blog name can be something related to what you want to blog about. Start writing down a few words about your blog and see if something comes up.

It is easier to become an authority blog for a particular niche if your blog name is the topic itself.

Owned by Jon Morrow. A lot of articles on this blog are all about blogging. He also owns Guestblogging.com which is all about guest blogging.

2. Use unrelated keywords

Your blog name isn’t as important as what your blog will stand for later on. Use a completely random and unique name. We’ve seen a lot of big brands do this.

Here are some bloggers I’ve seen online who do this:

Blog name example #2: OKDork.com

Noah Kagan’s blog is all about business, marketing, and personal development tips. Apart from the fact that he has a team of dorks who helps him write content, his blog name is not related to the topic.

If you are afraid of the idea that you might change your topic along the way, take Bryan’s blog as an example.

Bryan Harris’ blog is all about list building and business growth. He started this blog to teach people how to USE and to MAKE video in your business but ended up switching topics.

For years his blog name is totally unrelated to his blog. It took him quite some time before he decided to change its domain name to GrowthTools.com

3. Use another language

I used this strategy a lot when I’m thinking of a brand name. I have this thing for another language brand name. For example, I used to have a blog name called Kunde which means “client” in German.

Use Google Translate to come up with a unique blog name. Choose something short with fewer syllables to keep your blog name easy to remember.

4. Use Thesaurus for a catchy name

Another way to come up with new words is by using Thesaurus. Thesaurus can be a gold mine of inspiration when you wanted to say something in a slightly different way.

5. Use a blog name generator

If you can’t come up with a blog name, you might want to mix and match some keywords using a blog name generator?

Here are some blog name generators that you can use:

  • Wordoid – a naming tool that helps you find a name for your blog is an intelligent naming tool that helps you choose quality names using no more than 15 letters.
  • Nameboy – is one of the oldest and most popular blog name generators in the world. It can come up with suitable names for your blog, based on keywords
  • Panabee – another blog name generator that offers you hundreds of blog names to choose from. It is one of the easiest tools I found.

While some blog name ideas might sound funny and weird, it can give you tons of ideas and inspirations.

6. Use expired blog names

Sometimes, there are people who don’t want to start from scratch. If you are one of them, try searching for expired blog names.

You can look for expired domains here:

  • GoDaddy Auctions – this is one of the most popular websites when it comes to finding the right domain for you. I bought my domains here.
  • Domainhole – this website will help you find expired domains with the keywords you are searching for-
  • Moonsy – this website offers a list of expired domains with Page rank details, domain age, and traffic.

It’s a good alternative for those people who don’t want to spend hours coming up with a perfect blog name.

7. Use your own name

If you’re still struggling to come up with a blog name and run out of ideas, always remember that you can use your own name!

I actually chose this route because when I got started, I don’t know exactly what I wanted to blog about.

Back then, I wanted to turn this blog (valeriedeveza.com) into a lifestyle/travel blog but I ended up writing about marketing and blogging. LOL!

Here are some bloggers who chose to use their own name:

Ryan Robinson decided to shorten his name and use it as his domain name. You can also do this if you have a very long name.

Things to Consider When Deciding Blog Names

How long your blog name is

While there is no set rule on how long your blog name can be, it is a general rule of thumb that shorter is better than longer.

Make it easy to remember so people won’t have a hard time when they type it into the browser.

How your blog name is spelled

Before you finally decide on a blog name make sure you consider spelling and pronunciation.

Check out the most often misspelled words. If your blog’s name contains a word that is frequently misspelled, you might want to reconsider.

Is the domain name available?

Once you have a list of blog names, you need to check if the domain name is still available.

You can use the Bluehost search bar below to check if your blog names are still available:

  1. Thanks for the interesting post. It’s funny that everyone worries about the content, but we are all stuck at getting a unique name. I spent hours to name my blog and finally used the flower representing my month of birth, not a really good idea to attract visitors.

  2. for a very long time I could not choose the perfect name for my blog. Whatever I came up with, it seemed to me banal and not witty. After reading your article, I came up with something really interesting. Thank you!
